shade room
piazza del Campo , Siena
When we are outside, our sense of space is shaped by both solid and ephemeral aspects of the environment. Elements such as light and shade interact with physical forms and create projections that we perceive through small changes in temperature, humidity, texture, and color. And as they are constantly changing, they ultimately produce thousands of permutations of the geometries that define enclosure.
In the body of work included here, time lapse photography is used to survey volumes of shade at a distance. The boundaries of phenomenal enclosures can be difficult to perceive from within, but at a distance, their dimension, shape, and incremental change become clear. From there, photographic study and on the ground microclimatic survey are used to depict the gradients that give thickness and texture to these atmospheres. The drawings, models, and animations included in the gallery were derived from these collections of on-site observations, and together begin to describe how we experience a sense of interiority in the landscape.
